Double Flange

Double Flange
(for Steinway-style hammer butts)
Set-Up:
- Check x-axis on drill press chuck using 90 degree bubble and setup bubble on fixture. They should agree.
- Set side plate tight against flange keeping long edge of plate against angle to ensure a 90° reference on the flange. Tighten nut firmly.
- To adjust catcher stop, install a hammer butt with its original shank and use the 90° bubble against the hammer shank. Match the bubbles then add a ¼ turn up (ccw) to use gravity and a loose fit to your advantage when gluing in shanks into hammer butts; set by trial fit to match end samples in a section.
- Set the R.H. cam up to and slightly pressing the side of the hammer butt. This adjustment should remain constant.
- The L.H. cam is the active lever for removing and securing the hammer butts.

Note: This fixture will deliver best results when used with 7/32" brad point "stubby" drill bit and the disc sander fixture that precisely dimensions the end of the shank to .006 - .008" less than hole diameter.
Sequence for Operating:
- Set toggle on flange.
- Pull up catcher against stop.
- Tighten L.H. cam lever
